2023 Tour Championship Preview

The PGA Tour heads to Atlanta, Georgia for the 2023 Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club after Viktor Hovland's final-round 61 set a course record in his BMW Championship win.

This is the third and final week of the FedExCup Playoffs with just 30 players in the field this week at East Lake. The Tour Championship will also employ the following starting strokes format in the chase for the FedExCup:

Tour Championship SeedGolfer(s)Tour Championship Starting Strokes
1Scottie Scheffler-10
2Viktor Hovland-8
3Rory McIlroy-7
4Jon Rahm-6
5Lucas Glover-5
6-10Homa, Cantlay, Harman, Clark & Fitzpatrick-4
11-15Fleetwood, Henley, Bradley, Fowler & Schauffele-3
16-20Tom Kim, Im, Finau, Conners & Si Woo Kim-2
21-25Moore, Taylor, Schenk, Morikawa & Day-1
26-30Burns, Grillo, Hatton, Spieth & StrakaEven

Scottie Scheffler will start at -10, and he is the betting favorite at East Lake at +162 at open at bet365. Although Scheffler came up just short on Sunday at the BMW Championship in a tie for second, he begins with a two-shot lead in this event for the second straight year as he overtook Jon Rahm in Chicago for the top spot in the FedExCup Standings. He has a season-high 16 top-10 finishes and has been far and away the best golfer from tee to green this season.

There are 31 golfers who have gained 50+ strokes from tee-to-green in 2023.

Only three golfers have gained 100+.

Scottie Scheffler is the only one who has gained over 125+ and he's actually gained 214.41.

Here they are — with their putting numbers on the other axis.

Rory McIlroy will start three strokes behind Scheffler, and the Northern Irishman has the second-shortest odds to hoist his fourth FedExCup at +350. His solo fourth-place finish at the BMW Championship was his ninth consecutive top-nine finish. Last year, McIlroy erased a six-shot deficit over the final round of the Tour Championship as Scheffler shot a three-over 73 while McIlroy carded a four-under 66 to win the FedExCup by a stroke.

Viktor Hovland, who is coming off of an incredible win at the BMW Championship where he shot a seven-under 28 on the back nine, has the third-shortest odds to win his first FedExCup at +450. The Norwegian is playing in his fourth consecutive Tour Championship and has finished as high as fifth before in 2021. He jumped from seventh to second in the FedExCup Standings following his win at Olympia Fields Country Club.

Jon Rahm has the fourth-shortest odds to win this week at +750 as he fell from first to fourth in the FedExCup Standings following his T31 result at the BMW Championship. Rahm is making his seventh consecutive Tour Championship appearance and has finished as high as second in 2021. The Spaniard's four wins are the most on the PGA Tour this season, including a major championship win at the Masters.

Lucas Glover is the final golfer starting within five strokes of Scheffler, and he enters at +4000 to win his first FedExCup. Glover's putting breakthrough over the last few months has vaulted him into his first Tour Championship start since 2019 and just his second appearance since 2009. Glover's consecutive wins at the Wyndham Championship and FedEx St. Jude Championship helped him jump from outside the top 100 in the FedExCup Standings into the top five.

Course Preview

East Lake Golf Club is a 7,346-yard par-70 with two par-5s, four par-3s and 12 par-4s. Eight of the 12 par-4s are at least 440 yards, but both par-5s are under 600 yards.

Tom Bendelow designed East Lake in 1904, and Donald Ross completely reworked the course in 1913. Rees Jones, son of famed golf course architect Robert Trent Jones, has added further renovations in 1994, 2008 and 2016, and Andrew Green will complete a "sympathetic renovation" immediately following this week's Tour Championship.

East Lake is the oldest golf course in Atlanta and has hosted the Tour Championship since 2004.

The course features Bermudagrass greens and 2.5-inch Bermudagrass rough, while the fairways are zoysiagrass. Overall, there are 74 bunkers at East Lake, and water is in play on six of the 18 holes.
